The book, "Antioxidants in the Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome," is a collection of research results and theories that describe the types, sources, and benefits of antioxidants for health, particularly in treating metabolic syndrome. The pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome involves many factors, including oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is triggered by the presence of free radicals, both endogenous (normal cellular metabolism) and exogenous (exposure to environmental factors). Free radicals have both harmful and beneficial effects on the body. The beneficial effects of free radicals are obtained when their concentrations are moderate and they are involved in physiological functions. When free radical concentrations are high, they will cause oxidative stress that mediates various health disorders, including metabolic syndrome.
