The purpose of the first edition of this book (The Kidney at a Glance) was to provide concise and up-to-date information on health and disease in the renal system. Since that edition was published, there have been many exciting new developments in the kidney, renal system and urinary tract and this edition has been revised to keep pace with these developments. The new title reflects our better understanding of kidney function and the associated regulatory mechanisms as a system, which are important in normal physiology and in clinical medicine. New developments include the role of the ionic right, transporters, and related molecules such as the newly discovered barttin, the role of glomerular slit-pore proteins such as nephrin and podosin in proteinuria, and the function of polycystin and fibrocystin complexes in polycystic kidney disease. In addition, new drugs and therapies have become available such as calcimimetics, phosphate-binding resins, and new immunosuppression approaches.In addition, our understanding of basic renal function has greatly improved as the role of regulatory molecules such as adenosine, natriuretic peptide, and angiotensin II on the nephron has become clearer. There is also a new chapter on the renal system in pregnancy. The names and abbreviations for ion channels, genes, molecules, diseases and other terms have been completely updated.
