ALS is a rare disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spine that play a role in controlling muscle movement. This disease is characterized by weakness and pain in the muscles. When it gets worse, patients experience movement problems and are unable to breathe. ALS occurs in 5 out of 100,000 people worldwide. In the spinal cord, calcification is seen on the side (lateral), and that is why it is called lateral sclerosis. Until now, 90 percent of the causes of this disease are unknown. There is also no cure for it. There is only one drug that is permitted, namely riluzole, which functions to slow the worsening of the disease. Early symptoms of ALS are usually cramps, tense muscles, and difficulty chewing and swallowing. Having ALS means that a person will have difficulty moving, even though their mind is still functioning normally. It is like a mind trapped in a paralyzed body like that suffered by Stephen Hawking, the leading scientist. However, the struggle of ALS sufferers to survive is also worthy of inspiration.
