Perilaku dan softskills kesehatan : panduan untuk tenaga kesehatan (perawat dan bidan)
A midwife is trained to help pregnant women deliver their babies. Certified midwives usually receive a license to practice midwifery. Lay midwives perform duties but are not officially licensed while professional midwives are certified.
Midwives assist in childbirth and evaluate the health of the mother and baby after delivery. If one of the patients needs further medical attention, they must refer them to a hospital, because midwives do not have the professional medical training to handle such cases.
In contrast, a nurse can work in a variety of medical specialties beyond just labor and delivery. Labor and delivery nurses can work in the same medical field as midwives, however, nurses can only assist obstetricians. Nurses are not authorized to perform all deliveries, except in emergency situations.
Nurses must attend nursing school and receive a degree in nursing. Nurses must also pass a licensing exam to become a registered nurse, including passing an exam and having to log sufficient work hours to receive a more qualified certification. This is different for midwives, where lay midwives do not receive any formal training at all.
In addition to technical skills in handling patients (hard skills), a nurse/midwife is also required to be able to interact well with clients (soft skills). Technical skills are easier to learn, but soft skills are more difficult to do and require continuous practice.
