Elderly are individuals who are 60 years of age and above. Elderly people have unique life situations and face changes and physical problems as they age. Aging is a gradual process and is a condition where the body experiences a decrease in immunity.
In Indonesia, the elderly population is predicted to increase, so the need for elderly care is increasing. Gerontic nursing is a science that studies care for the elderly that focuses on health assessment and functional status, planning, implementation and evaluation.
The scope of Gerontic Nursing gerontic nursing care is the prevention of disability as a result of the aging process, care to meet the needs of the elderly and recovery to overcome the limitations of the elderly. Its nature is independent (self-reliant), interdependent (collaboration), humanistic and holistic.
The role of geriatric nurses can be broadly classified into two types, namely general roles and specialist roles. The general role is in various settings, such as hospitals, homes, nursing homes, communities, by providing care to individuals and their families.
Gerontological nursing itself has the function of guiding people of all ages to achieve healthy old age, respecting the rights of older people and ensuring others do the same, educating and encouraging health care providers, providing support and comfort in facing the death process, and so on.
