TORCH viruses are a group of viral infections that can be transmitted to the fetus during pregnancy and cause serious abnormalities or disorders in fetal development. TORCH is an acronym for:
T: Toxoplasmosis (caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii), O: Other (other infections, such as varicella-zoster virus, parvovirus B19, and Zika virus), R: Rubella (German measles), C: Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and H: Herpes simplex virus (HSV).
These infections can cause birth defects, developmental abnormalities or miscarriage. Therefore, it is important for pregnant women to avoid these infections and have proper health check-ups during pregnancy.
