This book consists of two parts. The first part takes the perspective of a student activist named Laut, telling how Laut and his friends made plans, moved around on the run, until they were caught by secret troops. While the second part is told by Asmara, Laut's younger sister. The second part represents the feelings of the families of victims of enforced disappearances, how they search for their relatives who never returned.

This book was written as a form of tribute to the activists who were kidnapped, who returned, and who did not return and the families who continue to search for answers until now.

This novel is a manifestation in the form of fiction that we as the Indonesian nation must not forget the history that has shaped and become the mainstay of this nation. This novel also invites readers to uncover the mysteries of this nation which are not taught in schools. Although this novel is fiction, Laut tells the story showing readers that this country once entered a dark era of government.

Laut Bercerita, Leila S. Chudori's latest novel, tells the story of a family who has lost a loved one, a group of friends who feel an emptiness in their chests, a group of people who love to torture and are good at betraying, a number of families who are looking for clarity on their child's grave, and about love that will never fade.
