Low birth weight (LBW) infants are high risk infants because they have greater morbidity and mortality associated with birth and adjustment after birth. High risk infants are born to mothers with high risk pregnancies. A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the life or health of the mother or foetus is in danger due to coincidental or unique pregnancy disorders. The conditions classified as high-risk pregnancies include premature rupture of membranes, diabetes mellitus, young primies, old primies, twin pregnancies, SC, vacuum, blood group / rhesus incompatibility, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, epilepsy, fever / sick mother, breech baby, drug addiction, suspected congenital abnormalities and other obstetric complications. While high risk babies are babies born at 32 - 36 weeks gestation / premature, babies with mothers who have Diabetes Mellitus, babies with a history of apnoea, babies with seizures, sepsis, asphyxia, babies with bleeding disorders and respiratory disorders.
