The pancreas is an organ located on the left side, just below the opening of the stomach into the duodenum. The pancreas is a dual gland, unlike other glands that have exocrine and endocrine functions. The endocrine gland of the pancreas secretes hormones such as insulin, glucagon, etc. Insulin and glucagon maintain blood glucose levels. Meanwhile, the exocrine portion secretes enzymes through the pancreatic duct directly into the small intestine. Enzymes are biomolecules that are proteins and spherical in shape. Enzymes consist of one or more polypeptide chains. These enzymes convert compounds and accelerate the reaction process by changing the initial molecules recognized and specifically bound by the enzyme (substrate) into other molecules (products).
