The Adrenal Medulla Volume 2
The last two years have seen important advances in our knowledge of the adrenal medulla and chromaffin cells. Perhaps the most interest was generated by the discovery that opioid peptides are synthesized, stored, and secreted by the adrenal medulla. The evidence obtained by Viveros, Diliberto, Hazum, et al. (1979) that opiate-like materials are stored in and secreted from chromaffin vesicles was a breakthrough. Several sub- sequent studies suggest that the adrenal medulla may have the highest concentration in the body of opioid peptides. The identification of a host of polypeptide precursors in chromaffin cells has intensified efforts to define the biosynthetic pathway of opioid peptides. It is clear from the articles reviewed in this volume that the adrenal medulla is an important organ for the study of opioid peptides.
