This book is a revised edition of the Manual of Basic Tecniques for a health Laboratory (WHO, 1980). The main revisions were made by Dr. K.Engbaek, Dr. C.C.Heuck, and Mr. A.H.Moody. This revision was deemed necessary due to the development of many new procedures and technologies since the previous edition, which have proven useful for small-scale laboratories in developing countries. Various examination procedures are covered in the relevant sections of the guidelines and some procedures that were considered obsolete have been replaced with more up-to-date techniques. The original purpose of this guideline has not changed. These guidelines are primarily intended to be used by laboratory personnel in developing countries during training and subsequently in the course of their work. In the selection of techniques, the aspects that should be primarily considered are affordability, reliability and practicality of the methods, and availability of resources for small periodic laboratories. This manual provides practical guidelines for carrying out a range of basic laboratory techniques safely and accurately.
