Therapeutic exercise : moving toward function
Health Promotion and wellness have taken on an increasingly important role in our soceiy today inactivity and ulhealthy lifestyles have led to increases in conditions such as obesity,diabetes, heart disease, and cronic pain. According to the Centers of Disease Control,an estimated 68 mill Americans age 18 and older are projected to have a diagnosis of arthritis by the year 2030. Additionally, an estimated 1 in 250 children will have been diagnosed with some from of arthiritis. In 2005, an estimated 5 millions Americans were diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Our role in improving the lives of patients and the vitality of our communities lies in our ability to provide leadership and expertisi in the provision of and education about therapeutic exercise. Individuals living with arthritis,diabetes,hearthdisease,obesity,and a multitude of other health conditions can benefit from a therapeutic exercis program. Progressive increase in impairments and decline in functional abilities is not inevitable for those living with disease. The appropriate application of therapeutic excercise can significantly increase engagement in community and improve the qulity of life in those living with chronic conditions. Physical therapists are ideally suited to design these therapeutic excercise programs. The Doctor of Physical Therapy graduate will be armed wit the most current evidence to appropiately dose therapeutic excercise for individuals across the health continuum.
