Hypermobility syndrome: recognition and management for physiotherapists
People who are endowed with increased ranges of joint movement are said to be hyermobile. It is becoming clear that hypermobility is more than the curiosity it was once considered to be. Thee is a growing appreaciation that hypermobility is more than a circus act(Grahame 2000),and that the joint hypermobility syndrome is a condition that needs to be taken seriously by all clinicians(Grahame 2001). It is becoming increasingly important in clinical practice, and the reason for this is that physiotherapy forms the mainstay of treament, yet the majority of physiotherapists shy away from treating such patients because,as they report, they are at a loss to know how treat them. It is for these colleagues that the idea for this book was conceived. It all started with a series of 1-day courses for physiotherapists interested to learnmore about hypermobility and joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS),its basis, its recognition and its treatment. So far there have been cuorses in London,Glasgow,Bexhill-on-Sea and Norwich. Each course was oversubscribed and deemed to have been highly successful. To spppread the word to a wider audience we hit on the notion of enticing the course lecturers to contribute their coursework to a book. What follows is in effect 'the book of the course'.The content is based on literature to be found in the medical and physiotherpy press, but also on the clinical experience of the authors, all of whom are involved in mnging patients with JHS. Our publishers,Butterwoth Heinemann, were quick o support th idea and hav given us every encouragement in producing it. Our aim was to reach a much greater number of physiotherapists, both in the UK and overseas, than could ever have attended our courses. There is still much to be learnt about this condition and it is hoped that this book will stimulate interest, debate and futher research.
