Public health is defined as "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and improving the quality of life through organized efforts and providing informed choices to people, organizations (public and private), communities, and individuals. Analyzing the determinants of health in a population and the threats it faces is fundamental to public health. Health here includes physical, psychological, and social well-being. Meanwhile, the community in question can be a handful of people or the entire population of a village or city; in a pandemic, the community can span several continents. Public health is an interdisciplinary field, involving sciences such as epidemiology, biostatistics, social sciences, and health service management. Other subfields that are considered important include environmental health, community health, mental health, health economics, health policy, health education, health politics, occupational health and safety, disability, gender issues in health, and sexual and reproductive health. Public health, together with primary, secondary, and tertiary health services, is part of a country's overall health care system. Public health is implemented through surveillance of diseases and health indicators, and through the promotion of healthy living behaviors. Common behaviors initiated by public health include promoting hand washing, breastfeeding, vaccination, suicide prevention, smoking cessation, understanding obesity, increasing accessibility to health care, and distributing condoms to control the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
