Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that often leads to disability with severe complications, including blindness, heart and kidney disease, and neuropathy. It affects millions of people around the world. Diabetes mellitus is found in almost all populations and is increasingly becoming a problem in developing countries. This report by an international expert group provides an overview of the epidemiologic situation, presents the latest classification and diagnostic criteria, and reviews the possibilities for prevention of the major types of diabetes and their complications. It also introduces prevention and control programs and their cost-effectiveness. Although further research is needed, this report emphasizes the possibility of preventing diabetes complications and intervening in high-risk groups. It emphasizes the implementation of appropriate prevention and control strategies.
