There are several things that make this complete manuscript book of PIT 1999 somewhat different from previous years. First, if in the previous PIT book the papers presented were more practical, this time we also present several papers that emphasize more on basic medical science such as aspects of genetics and biochemistry in the field of internal medicine. Discussions on perioperative management in the field of internal medicine, fluid therapy, and several other topics that we consider important and often encountered in the clinic, we present in this book with practical steps that can be done in the clinic. Second, the presence of several papers from expert meetings and satellite symposiums that usually do not require a complete manuscript, such as the paper by Dr. R.H.H. Nelwan from the Indonesian Tourism Medical Association symposium, and from Dr. Rizasyah Daud and Dr. Bambang Setyohadi at the Rheumatic Disease expert meeting. The editors assume that by including their manuscripts will add to the scientific weight of this book. Finally, at the end of this century, by giving thanks to Allah SWT for His grace, we present this PIT 99 book. We are confident that this book will be useful. We do not forget to express our thanks to all the authors and all those who have worked hard to spend time so that this book can be present among us all.
