Atlas Helmintologi Kedokteran
Diseases caused by parasitic worms are still commonly found in Indonesia. Several types of roundworms (Nematoda), especially those belonging to the intestinal worm group, are highly prevalent. In some areas, their prevalence can reach 70-80%. Other worms, such as flukes (Trematoda) and tapeworms (Cestoda), are also commonly found. This indicates that worm infections remain a significant public health issue in Indonesia. Diagnosis of worm infections is based on the detection of eggs, larvae, and adult worms. The eggs and larvae are very small and can only be seen under a microscope, so diagnosis is highly dependent on the equipment and the skill and accuracy of the examiner. Parasites in the above stages found in feces, stool, or body tissue are often not as clear as the pictures in textbooks. Errors in determining the type of parasite or confusion with objects similar to parasites, such as food debris, saprophytic fungi, and others, can easily occur. Such misdiagnoses can sometimes have fatal consequences.
