The current edition has several new features, including formatting changes, the addition of color photos, and the addition of new and revised review questions at the end of each chapter. All chapters have been revised at the end of each chapter. All chapters have been extensively revised to keep up with the tremendous advances in medical discoveries supported by molecular mechanisms, as well as the discovery of new pathogens. Also new to this edition is the involvement of Timothy Mietzner, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Microbilogy and Molecular Genetics at the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine. Dr. Mietzner's extensive knowledge in the field of molecular microbial pathogenesis will be of great value to this, as well as future editions, and we welcome his participation. The book also allows for the addition of many color photographs and photomicrographs, and a typical view of the new photographs can be seen in the Bacteriology Section (III). Gram stains were photographed using the same microscope, camera, and soft traps. The images were cropped for printing purposes to a square with a width of one column. As a result, the relative sizes of bacteria can be compared between images.
