The postpartum period (puerperium) begins 2 hours after the birth of the placenta and lasts for 6 weeks (42 days) after that. Puerperium is derived from the word Puer which means baby and Parous giving birth. So, puerperium means the period after giving birth, which is the recovery period, starting from the end of labor until the reproductive organs return to their pre-pregnancy state. Around 50% of maternal deaths occur in the first 24 hours postpartum, so quality postpartum care must be provided during that period to meet the needs of the mother and baby.

Based on midwifery service standards, postpartum service standards include newborn care (standard 13), handling the first 2 hours after delivery (standard 14), and services for mothers and babies during the postpartum period (standard 15), and when referring to competency 5 (midwife competency standards), the principles of midwifery care for mothers during the postpartum and breastfeeding periods must be of high quality and responsive to local culture.

The purpose of postpartum care is to detect the possibility of postpartum hemorrhage and infection, the birth attendant must be alert, at least one hour postpartum to overcome the possibility of complications of childbirth. Generally women are very weak after giving birth, especially if the labor lasts a long time. Maintaining the health of the mother and her baby both physically and psychologically must be provided by the birth attendant. The mother is advised to maintain body hygiene, teach the mother in labor how to clean the genital area with soap and water, clean the area around the vulva first, from front to back and then around the anus. Advise the mother to wash her hands with soap and water before and after. If the mother has an episiotomy or laceration wound, advise the mother to avoid touching the wound area.
