Kimia dan ekotoksikologi pencemaran
Socio-economic and political forces play a major role in the regulation of pollution. However, to enable pollution to be seen in its correct perspective and to make appropriate regulatory measures, we need a clear understanding of its nature and effects. This book aims to provide a basic understanding of the chemical, toxicological, and ecological factors involved when major classes of pollutants act in natural systems. It does not deal with direct effects on humans and human health as other topics require full and detailed attention. A chemical and ecotoxicological approach is taken in which the nature and effects of pollutants are considered from their source and chemical properties, through the dynamics in the environment to their toxic and other adverse effects on living organisms and ecosystems. A large number of scientific papers and books are available on different aspects of pollution. However, only a small number discuss the basic scientific principles involved in various pollution processes. In this book, the available information has been summarized and evaluated to result in the development of several theories that converge as fundamental chemical and ecological properties of pollution processes. We believe that a book with this approach is rare. Although most researchers have gone directly to short-term management goals, a large body of information has been gathered and evaluated.
